Materials:


·        Tool Belts

·        Fabric Paints

·        Brushes or sponges for painting

·        Pencils

·        Collecting tools - sweep nets, beat sheets, jars

·        Pudding

·        Chocolate cookies

·        Gummy insects

·        Insect recipes from books and/or the internet

·        Blank scrapbooks

·        Glue

·        Tape

·        Paper

·        crayons

Activities:

 

Activity 1: Bug Belt

Students will decorate their bug belts using a method of their choice.  Paint may be placed on the belts using sponges, brushes, or squirt bottles.

            ·  Choose a design or designs for the belt.

            ·  Draw the design on the belt using a pencil.

            ·  Decorate the design using fabric paints.

             

 

Activity 2:  Insect Collecting

·  Students will collect insects using techniques learned earlier in the week to complete their collection for the week.

·  Visit a variety of habitats including aquatic and forested areas.

 

Activity 3:  Insect Pudding

            ·  Mix pudding and place in a bowl.

            ·  Crumble chocolate cookies to make crumbs for the ‘dirt’.

            ·  Place ‘dirt’ on top of the pudding.

            ·  Place gummy insects and worms into the pudding and on top.

            ·  Give each student a portion of the pudding in a plastic cup.

            ·  Save for lunch.

 

Activity 4: Insect Recipes

·  Explain to students that in some cultures people eat insects.  Discuss the important nutritional 

value provided by insects (protein).  Tell students they will get to look at some insect recipes

and choose a favorite to put in their scrapbook.

·  Allow students time to look through several recipes.

·  Students copy and decorate their favorite recipe to include in the scrapbook.

 

Activity 5:  Scrapbook Completion

            ·  Hand out blank scrapbooks to students.

·  Allow students to complete pages, add pictures from the week, and decorate the cover.

 

Activity 6:  Presentations and Sharing

·  Students prepare their insect collections and scrapbooks for sharing with parents and visitors.

            ·  Students share with parents and visitors.
